About Everyday Explorers

There's an explorer in all of us.

You've seen National Geographic's stunning videos capturing life in the wild and in exotic places around the world. Now it's your turn. Grab your camera and get shots of local wildlife and your pets, film your own environmental message, capture weather phenomena as they happen, or create a video travelogue about your favorite place. Post your video here, and check out other Everyday Explorers' clips. You can comment on each other's videos, rate your favorites, and much more.

Shooting video is easy and inexpensive—most digital cameras and many cell phones have video capability—and uploading the clips takes just a few minutes. Your clip may be selected as a featured video, and you might even be contacted by National Geographic to include your film in our professional library.

Become an Everyday Explorer and help us in our mission to inspire others to care about the planet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What type of video recording equipment do I need?
You can use any type of video recording equipment to make your video—a high-tech video camera, a laptop camera, even a mobile phone camera. Of course, we encourage high-quality videos.

What are the technical specifications for videos?
Videos must be in .flv, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .mov, .3gp, .mpg, .mpeg, or .mp4 format. Files cannot be larger than 100MB. Final output resolution will be 480 pixels wide by 360 pixels tall. You may upload videos that are filmed at larger sizes; they will be automatically resized. If your video is in a proportion that does not match the Everyday Explorers window (4:3), you may see black bars on the tops or sides of your videos. This is necessary so that your original video proportions are not stretched.

Do I need an Everyday Explorers account to upload a video?
Yes, you need to set up an account before you can upload a video.

On the Registration page, fill in your information. Make sure you enter an email address that you have access to, since you'll be required to verify it in order to complete the registration process. Note: You must be 13 or older in order to register.

You'll be asked to choose two images for your visual code. Be sure to remember these images—you may be asked to identify them when using other National Geographic features, such as My Shot.

Select the checkbox indicating you have read and agree to the Terms of Service. (Learn more about our privacy policy.)

Once you've filled out the registration form, click "Sign Up" at the bottom of the page. If you have filled out the form correctly, you will see your online profile page. Click "Send Email" to verify your email address.

Check your inbox for an email titled "Email Confirmation for National Geographic." Click the link in the email, and the process is complete.

How do I upload a video?
In order to submit a video, you'll need an Everyday Explorers account. (See above for registration information.)

Once you have an account, you can upload videos by clicking "Upload a Video" on the Everyday Explorers home page or by clicking "My Account" and then choosing "My Videos."

On the Add My Video page, click "Browse" to upload the video from your computer. You can submit videos in any standard video format as long as the file size is under 100MB . (See more about technical specifications above.) You must also agree to National Geographic's Terms of Service.

Next, fill out the information fields for your video. Give it a title and add a short description. You must also add one or more tags (see more about tags below). Next, choose a category for your video. If your video could fit into more than one category, choose the category that's most directly related and then add descriptive tags. For instance, if your video is of a rainstorm in Yellowstone National Park, select Weather as the category, then add "Yellowstone" as a tag.

Once the forms are filled out, click "Add Video."

How many videos can I upload?
You can upload multiple videos, as long as they relate to the given category.

Will you be adding more categories?
Yes, we will be adding video categories as the site expands. If you have suggestions for new categories, email them to community.accounts@ngs.org.

If you have a video that does not fit into one of our categories but you would like to include it on the site, email community.accounts@ngs.org.

What are tags?
Tags are descriptive keywords. By adding tags to your video, you make it easy for others to find it via search. For instance, a video of a raccoon in a park in Arizona could have the tags "raccoon," "Arizona," and "park." Anyone searching for videos of raccoons—or parks or Arizona—would find your video.
